#napowrimo Day 17- “Dogs”

Hey, loves. On Day 17 of National Poetry Month, the prompt is to think about dogs you have known, seen, or heard about, and then use them as a springboard into wherever they take you. Here’s my poem:

Day 17 - DOGS

By Farah Lawal Harris

I’m supposed to write about dogs,

but all I can think of is

if we had paws and four legs,

would we suffer less?

Maybe curly fur instead of 4c coils,

a bark for someone else’s danger,

and acceptance of having a master

would save us from disaster.

All I can think of is if we had paws…

Man, hell nah!

Why I need to chow down

when I wear a crown?

I shouldn’t have to be a pet

to be seen as excellent.

Oh, how excellent

we creatures were all made to be.

No disrespect to dogs,

I just want

respect

for me.
