#napowrimo Day 7 - “The Devil You Know”

Hey, y’all. Day 7’s writing prompts for National Poetry Month is to write a poem that argues against, or somehow questions, a proverb or saying. Here’s my poem:

Day 7 - “THE DEVIL YOU KNOW”

By Farah Lawal Harris

“Better the devil you know

than the devil you don’t. “

but why i gotta ride with the devil tho?

i don’t want to be the devils advocate,

both rooting for myself and working against.

get with this:

in a blind taste test, it was found

that predictability and complacency

taste eerily similar, therefore

making the devil you know familiar.

i wanna taste what I never seen before,

look up and see myself

sky high with dreams on my mind,

not shying away from opportunities

or the devil who’s a stranger to me

cuz i trust that God’s got me for sure.

so to hell with the devil i know.
