DREAMERHEAD

Hey, y’all.

For Day 17 of National Poetry Writing Month, the prompt is to:

Write a poem that is inspired by a piece of music, and that shares its title with that piece of music. Need an example? Here’s A. Van Jordan’s “Que Sera Sera” and Adrian Matejka’s “Soave Sia Il Vento.”

I was inspired by the song “Chickenhead” by Project Pat featuring LaChat and Three Six Mafia…for real, y’all. I also included a line inspired by JAY-Z’s “Family Feud.”

Here’s my poem:

DREAMERHEAD

By Farah Lawal Harris, 2024

Bald head, chemo girl ain’t had no hair to curl

threw up, grew up, I just bout glew up

Needed to stop the inner control freak

Stopped drumming for a while, let God control the beat.

I danced til the bottom of my feet hurt

Told my husband this spiritual shit really works.

Woop-woop!

In the past, I’d give them all my ass to kiss.

Woop-woop!

But today, I operate in wellness.

I glow like a baby who been here before

and like that baby, I feel like I been reborn

Woop-woop!

Shout out to my pink sisters and my breasties

when it gets hard, close your eyes and baby, just breathe

Things get better. This is just a season, trust me.

I pray for the day when all of us are cancer-free.
