FLOWERS (Poem)

Hey y’all!

The writing prompt for Day 25 of National Poetry Writing Month is to write a love poem, one that names at least one flower, contains one parenthetical statement, and in which at least some lines break in unusual places.

Here is my poem:

FLOWERS

By Farah Lawal Harris, © 2023

I am a sunflower, growing

toward the sun and sprouting

edible seeds before

I’m gone. I believe

you always saw my petals

through tightly wrapped leaves atop

hardened off stem.

(You must’ve smelled them

the night pheromones

tickled our souls.)

You bloom alongside me,

entangling roots with endless room

to grow.

Imagine I used to fear the rain

that waters our soil.

Imagine believing

that I’m in control.
