#napowrimo Day 30 - “Compilation”

I made it! It’s the last day of National Poetry Month and I’ve written 30 poems in 30 days! 🥳 The final writing prompt is to write a cento. This is a poem that is made up of lines taken from other poems. The poems I chose to pull from are hip-hop songs since hip-hop is my favorite style of poetry. Here it is:


Day 30 - COMPILATION

I get mad frustrated when I rhyme. [Ms. Lauryn Hill, “How Many Mics?]

My words are diamonds dug out a mine, [Killer Mike, “The Whole World]

Powerful impact—BOOM!—from the cannon! [Busta Rhymes, “Scenario”]

The fire's in my eyes and the flames need fannin'. [Talib Kweli, “K.O.S. (Determination)”]

This my testament to those burned, [Method Man, “Triumph”]

on the block, wit'cha Glock, trippin' off sherm. [2Pac, “I Ain’t Mad At Cha]

My poetry’s deep, I never fell. [Nas, “It Ain’t Hard to Tell”]

Followin’ my footprints you can’t fail. [JAY-Z, “Real As It Gets”]

Either wish me well, go to hell, or go to Yale. [Andre 3000, “Mighty ‘O’”]

I battle anybody, I don’t care who tell. [LL Cool J, “Rock the Bells”]

I bomb atomically, Socrates philosophies and [Inspectah Deck, “Triumph”]

Bzzz! Throw a hex on the whole family. [Lil’ Kim, “It’s All About the Benjamins (Remix)”]

But, um, back to the lecture at hand [Snoop Dogg, “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang”]

cuz you know and I know that you know who I am. [Phife Dawg, “Check The Rhime”]

I thank the Lord every day that I'm blessed with a gift [DMX, “Stop Being Greedy”]

cuz I baptize my lips every time I take a sip. [Ms. Lauryn Hill, “Final Hour”]
